HORSES FOR SALE
Buying your first horse? What should you look for? Do you need a trainer? How much should you pay?
All good questions for the first time buyer. However they are only questions about the horse. After 45 years of watching and learning as folks buy and sell horses I have learned a thing or maybe two. Most people never truly evaluate their own ability only the horses ability. Setting one up for disaster at best. Be honest with your self. If you want to rescue, do you have the skill to help a troubled horse? If you want a young horse do you have that Skill to help a young horse? Horsemanship is an art, a set of skills is required to help any horse understand what you are asking it. Keep in mind a young horse, mature horse or any horse for that matter will never learn or know how to speak english. And as with any animal you will have to learn how to communicate with it.
Some of my favorite statements about buying your first horse.
I want to buy a young horse that my kids can grow up with.
This fantasy is so very dangerous unless you have what we refer to a disposable kids. Baby horses are lethal to those who don't know what they are doing by nature. Nature in an animal is not something you can change. Those horses that you find that are 'gentle' are the most lethal.
Why?
Gentle horses have been desensitized to the point where they can be handled and worked with until you want to do something they don't want to do. Like ride or walk on a lead rope past a snake or a turtle. Even if you can get on and ride. Lets say walk, trot, canter even jumping or some obstacles. You will find something that the horse has not seen or met up with and he or she will revert to instinct and that does not include you. Then its the horses fault.
I want to get a rescue horse.
What a great idea, for someone that can help that troubled horse through the trauma that has been a part of his entire life with humans. Most times the horse has learned to evade human interaction that has been bad or simply misunderstood by the horse and therefore becomes troublesome for both human and horse.
Can you ride as fast as the horse can run?
